Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has emerged as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) for revascularization of carotid occlusive disease in specific high-risk circumstances. With the exponential increase in carotid stenting, ISR may become increasingly prevalent, and these patients will require intensive follow-up monitoring for recurrence.

In recent years, duplex ultrasonography has been considered a valued noninvasive diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of carotid artery occlusive disease and the ongoing surveillance of carotid stents for patency and identification of in-stent restenosis and other complications.
